“I laughed, I cried, I sang.”
As Keegan Devlin, a young man growing up on a council estate in East London, faces the news of his best friends terminal condition, he reacts, and not initially in a positive way. But his strength of character and ability to focus on the positive aspects, with humour and a deep sense of responsibility, carries him through. Meeting Emily he transforms his life and makes a bold decision aiming to give them a future. These are the early years of the 1980s and with new positive attitudes and opportunities for everyone in the UK, anything is possible. His friend is still battling, and against all the odds, is winning against his illness. But then War! The Falkland’s have been invaded and Keegan, as a member of The Parachute Regiment is part of the task force sent to recapture the islands. If fighting battles in terrifying conditions was not enough for a young man to cope with, events happening back in the UK will have profound life changing consequences for everybody.
A novel that builds slowly, reflecting the way ordinary people deal with not quite so ordinary subjects, explodes on one fateful night in April 1982. Their lives will never be the same again.
“Intriguing coming-of-age-story filled with nostalgic feelings of the 80s! Definitely a page turner.”
“Completely enjoyed the visit back to the 80″s. The central characters connected to my heart and over thinking brain. How making decisions for others never works out well and that true love wins and loses. Beautifully written and I look forward to reading another book by this great author.”
The Quiet Man - Sometimes I attempt Poetry!
Dazzling sunshine radiates, across the morning sky,
Fresh greens and colours dominate, a pleasure on the eye.
Mating birds sing joyfully, the Spring at last arrives,
The sound of children playing, the moments of their lives.
A gentle breeze is blowing, the smell of fresh cut grass,
Memories of years gone by, and hope the time will last.
The quiet man sits all alone, no pleasure can he gain,
The smile reserved for others, he searches for in vain.
The golden beach is heated, by rays of searing sun,
Striped umbrellas fill the beach, the summer has begun.
Turquoise waves wash up to them, as children play with sand,
The pushchairs under shelter, mum’s there to lend a hand.
Calls of ‘ice-cream’ can be heard, by sellers on the shore,
The children are excited, the dads will go home poor.
The quiet man lays all alone, no pleasure can he gain,
The smile reserved for others, he searches for in vain.
Autumn winds swirl through the trees, across the woods and fields,
Golden browns and oranges, the summer colours yield.
Wrapped in coats bright scarves and hats, with cheeks pink blushed from cold,
Cries ring out across the parks, as dogs once more controlled.
Children play on swings and slides, and look to climb the trees,
The smell of leaves now mulching, stirs distant memories.
The quiet man walks all alone, no pleasure can he gain,
The smile reserved for others, he searches for in vain.
